AI for Business

AI readiness assessment: is your business actually ready for AI?

An AI readiness assessment is a quick, honest check of whether your business is ready to adopt AI before you spend a penny. This guide gives you the 5-point checklist to score yourself, and tells you what to do if the answer is "not yet".

A business owner reviewing a checklist and a readiness gauge before adopting AI, an AI readiness assessment

An AI readiness assessment is a quick check of whether your business is ready to adopt AI before you spend money on it. It looks at five things: a clear use case, your data, your processes, your team, and your budget. The output is an honest answer, ready, not yet, or start here.

I run KlarifAi, a UK AI consultancy for small businesses. I run this check on the free call, and I tell people the truth, because half of the businesses that ask about AI are better off fixing one process first. Here is the same check, so you can run it yourself.

What an AI readiness assessment is

It is not a 40-page report. For a small business, ai readiness comes down to one question per area: do you have a real task worth automating, and the basics in place to support it. If yes, you are ready to start small. If no, the assessment shows you the one thing to fix first, which saves you from paying for AI that was never going to work.

    The 5-point AI readiness checklist

    A clear use case

You have one repetitive task you do often, and you can name it in a sentence. Vague goals like "use more AI" do not count.

    Organised data

The information the task needs lives somewhere findable, not only in someone's head or 12 scattered spreadsheets.

    A stable process

The steps are roughly the same each time. If the process is chaos, automating it just speeds up the chaos.

    A person who can help

Someone on the team has a little time to help set it up and run it after. AI is not fully hands-off.

    Worth the cost

The task happens often enough that saved hours justify the spend. Twenty times a week, not twenty times a year.

    Score yourself in 2 minutes

Answer yes or no to each. Count your yeses.

I can name one task we do often that eats real hours.
The information that task needs is organised and findable.
The steps are roughly the same each time we do it.
Someone on the team has a little time to help set it up.
We do this task often enough that saved hours are worth paying for.
We are not breaking data or consent rules with the data involved.

5 to 6 yeses: you are ready. Pick the task and automate it. 3 to 4: nearly there, fix the gaps first. 0 to 2: not yet, and that is fine. Start with the basics below.

If you are not ready yet

A low score is a useful answer, not a failure. It usually points to one fix:

    • No clear task: list the jobs that waste the most time for a week, then pick one.
    • Messy process: write the steps down and tidy them before automating anything.
    • Scattered data: get the information into one findable place first.
    • Low volume: if it happens rarely, do it by hand. AI is not worth it yet.

Fix the one thing, and you move from "not yet" to "ready". For the bigger picture, the AI consulting guide covers what comes after.

How our AI readiness assessment works

At KlarifAi the assessment is the free 30-minute discovery call. We run the 5 points together, find the best first task or the one thing to fix, and you leave with a short plan you keep, whether or not you hire us. There is no charge and no pressure. If you are not ready, we say so.

    Frequently asked questions

What is an AI readiness assessment?

A quick check of whether your business is ready to adopt AI before you spend on it. It looks at a clear use case, your data, your process, your team, and your budget, and gives an honest yes, not yet, or start here.

How do I know if my business is ready for AI?

You are ready when you have one repetitive task you do often, the information it needs is reasonably organised, and a person who can spend a little time helping set it up. If the process is chaotic, fix that first.

Does an AI readiness assessment cost anything?

At KlarifAi it is part of the free 30-minute discovery call. You get an honest read on whether AI is worth it for you right now, with no obligation and no cost.

What if my business is not ready for AI yet?

That is a useful answer. It usually means tidying one messy process or organising the data behind a task first. Do that, and a small automation becomes straightforward.

What does an AI readiness assessment check?

A clear use case, organised data, a stable process, a person who can help, and whether the saved time justifies the cost. A weak score on any one shows you where to start.
